Our funding

Our funding

We receive funding from a variety of different sources, but typically, our biggest source of income is from independent trusts and foundations. As an ethical organisation, we only accept grant funding and commissioned work that does not compromise our independence.

 

Trusts and foundations

We are very grateful to all those trusts and foundations that have supported our work over the years, in particular the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, which is a major supporter of our key programmes for the period October 2016-September 2019. We would also like to acknowledge the key role played by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust in our early development, whose funding in 1998 helped to set the Food Ethics Council up. 

We are grateful to the Big Lottery Fund, Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, JMG Foundation and the A Team Foundation for commissioning our ‘Food issues census 2017’ work. We are also grateful to AW360 Trust for supporting our 2017 staff and Council Away Day.

 

Work for other organisations

We sometimes undertake research for, and with, other organisations. This includes for example our ‘Catering for Sustainability’ report, commissioned by WWF UK and Sodexo Ltd, and our work on ‘the Future of Food’, in collaboration with the New Citizenship Project.

 

Individual donations

Our work depends on public support. We welcome financial support from major donors who share our passion for a fair food system and our values. Because we guard our independence carefully, we'd ask individuals and organisations wishing to support our work to contact our staff in the first instance by emailing dan@foodethicscouncil.org.

 

Business Forums

Every two months the Food Ethics Council hosts an evening roundtable seminar for our Business Forum members. Each meeting includes a talk by experts, followed by a discussion about the issue over dinner, and is chaired by a Food Ethics Council member. Membership is by invitation and members pay a subscription fee to attend the meetings. The fee covers costs of running the events.

How we use our funding

We operate a streamlined operating model with low overheads. Our 16 expert Council members work in a voluntary capacity and add value by advising and helping staff deliver and disseminate our work through formal and informal working groups, and via their own networks.
