"Sustain and the Food Ethics Council have published a briefing recommending that food companies' 'water stewardship' should be shown on food labels. Such a label would declare that the product manufacturer participates in a water stewardship programme, such as the programme being developed by the Alliance for Water Stewardship, rather than offering a figure for a product's water footprint.
Meanwhile, the Food and Drink Federation has reported that water used by the 36 companies signed up to its water efficiency programme fell 1.7% in 2008, its first reporting year. The programme's members are aiming to cut their water use by 20% by 2020 from a 2007 baseline."
