What Copenhagen means for us: climate challenges for the food sector

A report of the September 2009 Business Forum meeting

In Copenhagen this December, 192 countries will meet to broker a global climate change agreement beyond 2012. Nobody knows what deal will be reached, but agriculture will be on the agenda and the sector’s future depends on the outcome. Wider measures, for instance on deforestation and the Clean Development Mechanism, may also have knock-on effects for the food sector. As governments, industries and public interest groups set out their stalls, what issues should food businesses consider?

The September 2009 meeting of the Food Ethics Council’s (FEC) Business Forum discussed such issues. We are very grateful to Damian Ryan, Senior Analyst at the Climate Group, and Tara Garnett, Co-ordinator of the Food Climate Research Network, for speaking at the event. The chair was Helen Browning OBE, Food and Farming Director of the Soil Association and chair of the FEC.
