Food Ethics Council wins BBC Food and Farming award

Published: 27 November 2009

The Food Ethics Council is delighted to have won the Derek Cooper award at the annual BBC Food and Farming Awards ceremony.

The award, named after the first BBC Food Programme presenter, is given to the individual or organisation that has done most to increase our knowledge and understanding of good food and the vital role it plays in our lives.

The award was presented at a ceremony chaired by Food Programme presenter Sheila Dillon, who commented:

"Without the work of the Food Ethics Council I don't see how we can bring about the changes necessary to create the robust, sustainable food system that scientists and politicians all now agree is crucial for our survival."

River Cottage chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, presenting the award said:

“…whether you're a consumer, a business, or a government, there are consequences of the decisions you make… for animal welfare, for climate change and for all of us, so I think it's a fantastic decision.”

Dr. Tom MacMillan, executive director of the Food Ethics Council said:

“Winning the Derek Cooper award is tremendously exciting. The work we do to ensure the food system is fair for people, animals and the planet often takes place behind the scenes.

“This award very publicly highlights the importance of putting ethics at the heart of food and farming.”

As a key tool in our efforts to champion a fair food system, the Food Ethics Council’s new website goes live today at www.foodethicscouncil.org.

Packed full of vital information on the most important issues in food and farming, it’s an essential resource for policy makers, business people, and everyone interested in how food gets from food to fork.

With the low-down on hot topics from antibiotics to zoonosis, tools to help businesses, policy makers and consumers make the best choices about food production and consumption, and research on issues ranging from water labelling to seasonal food, it is well worth bookmarking.

Dr. MacMillan said:

“Our new website is a one-stop-shop for everyone interested in finding out about the ethics of food and farming.

“We aim to ensure the food system is fair for people, animals and the planet. As part of that, we are committed to sharing the work we do and using it to help people make better choices about food.”
