PROFESSOR BEN MEPHAM – Founder Director of the Food Ethics Council
Special Professor in Applied Bioethics: University of Nottingham; Visiting Professor in Bioethics, University of Lincoln, Fellow of the Society of Biology
Ben Mepham was a founder member of the Council and its Executive Director for the first five years. He was formerly Director of the Centre for Applied Bioethics at the University of Nottingham, but following retirement now has honorary professorships at Nottingham and Lincoln Universities, where he contributes to courses at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels.
He was a founder member, in the role of bioethicist, of both the Government’s Biotechnology Commission (AEBC, 2000-2003) and the European Society for Agricultural and Food Ethics (EURSAFE), of which he was awarded Honorary Life Membership in 2009 for ‘his extraordinary services to the Society.’ He has also served on several EU policy committees, and continues to publish in the academic literature.
In 2012 he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Biology (FSB), the leading professional body representing the learned and other organisations comprising the UK biosciences.
With an academic background in physiology and biochemistry, he has researched and taught bioethics for over 30 years.
His editorship of Food Ethics (Routledge, 1996) apparently marked the first use of the term, which is now used widely. His highly-acclaimed Bioethics: an introduction for the biosciences (OUP, 2e 2008) provides an extensive account of the ethical matrix, a conceptual tool that he introduced in the 1990s, which has been employed by many governmental, non-governmental and educational organisations.
When not in a scholarly mode, he runs a second-hand book business in Lincoln and cultivates his allotment.
