The first report produced by the Food Ethics Council examined the ethics of administering drugs to farm animals: firstly to control disease and secondly to increase productivity. At the time of the report, the two issues of greatest concern were the use of antibiotics as ‘growth promotants’ in pigs and poultry and the use of hormones in milk and beef production.
