Statement from the Food Ethics Council – June 2026

We are deeply concerned by the racist attacks that have taken place in Belfast this week, sometimes orchestrated by people far away from Northern Ireland. As an organisation working across the UK for fairer food systems, this matters to us on several levels. We have a colleague based in Belfast, we have worked alongside partners in Northern Ireland for several years, and we care deeply about the safety and wellbeing of our staff and all the communities in Northern Ireland.

We also know that these attacks do not reflect the Belfast – or the Northern Ireland – that so many people recognise. Across the region, people are doing incredible work in food, farming and community life, building connection, dignity and resilience every day. Those efforts speak to the Belfast of today.

Our organisation is built on respect for wellbeing, freedom and justice. These values shape our approach to food ethics and to the kind of society we want to help build. We stand firmly against racism. We stand for people and communities being stronger together – respecting difference, and celebrating the diversity that enriches all parts of the UK. Everyone has a right to decent food as part of a wider set of human rights.

What has happened in Belfast is not an isolated incident. Racist attacks and hate crimes are happening in many parts of the UK. Naming that reality matters. Across Belfast, people have mobilised to bring individuals and families to safety, to provide food and provisions, to arrange lifts to work, school and doctors’ appointments, and to raise money to support those impacted by racist attacks. This is Belfast.

We know that a statement from us will not fix the harm caused. But silence helps no one. We stand in solidarity with the people of Belfast, and we condemn racist behaviour and violence wherever it occurs. Let’s choose connection over division. Let’s choose to break bread together.
