Engaging others in your food philosophy

How can food and farming businesses meaningfully involve others – including customers – on their sustainability journeys?

Food and farming businesses are increasingly embedding sustainability into strategies and customer offerings. This meeting explored how businesses can meaningfully involve people – including customers – on their sustainability journeys.

Food companies are increasingly bringing sustainability expertise into the Boardroom, ensuring sustainability is not a tick box on the risk register. However, very few have successfully extended their invitation to their customers – and the general public – to join them in tackling our collective sustainability issues. When treating customers as engaged food citizens, rather than simply as the ‘end consumer’, we can shift our relationship, build trust, and diversify positive interventions to tackle big sustainability issues.

How can food companies start treating customers as food citizens? How can businesses give the public a role in decisions about sustainability, moving beyond simply telling customers what they are doing to benefit society and the environment – and involve them instead? These are some of the questions we explored at this Business Forum.
