Ralph Early is a food scientist and food ethicist. Since retirement in December 2018, he has been active also as a food writer. As a university lecturer he taught in the Higher Education sector from 1993, prior to which his career spanned the food industry with experience in farming, food manufacture, NPD and quality and food safety management, in small and large food businesses, including appointments as Head of Industrial Product Development, followed by Quality Standards Manager, for Dairy Crest Ltd.
From 1996, he worked to introduce food science and technology and food policy and ethics, among other topics, to Harper Adams University’s curriculum, where he also established the department of Food Science and Agri-food Supply Chain Management, and the West Midlands Regional Food Academy. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, also of the Institute of Food Science and Technology, and the Institute of Meat.
